“My husband had always been aggressive, but the day he threatened my life, I knew I had to leave.”
Samah hid in the washroom, shaking, afraid of what might happen next. She knew she had to leave but she also knew that trying to escape could cost her life.
The most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence is when she attempts to leave her abuser becauseviolence often escalates when control is threatened. Many women are seriously harmed or killed during this moment of separation.
For days, Samah lived quietly, protecting her daughter, waiting for a safe moment. That’s when she called Nisa Foundation. A caseworker helped her create a safety plan and helped her and her daughter find safety, while offering support along the way.
This Ramadan, women like Samah are still waiting for a safe moment to leave.
