Gender-based violence (GBV) affects millions of people around the world. Survivors often carry not just the pain of what happened to them, but also feelings of fear, shame, and isolation.

At Nisa Foundation, we see every day how support from friends, families, and communities can change lives. You don’t have to be an expert to help. With care and compassion, you can make a real difference.  

Here are some simple, practical ways to support survivors of gender-based violence.

1. Listen Without Judgment

When someone shares their experience, it takes incredible courage. Survivors don’t always need advice; they need to be heard.

  • Be present: Put aside distractions and listen closely.
  • Avoid judgment: Don’t ask, “Why didn’t you leave?” or blame them for what happened.
  • Validate: Phrases like “I believe you” or “You are not alone” provide comfort and reassurance.

Listening builds trust and allows survivors to feel seen and supported.

2. Believe Survivors

Doubt and disbelief are some of the greatest barriers survivors face. By choosing to believe them, you help counter the silence and stigma.

  • Affirm their courage: Let them know how brave they are for speaking up.
  • Reject myths: Avoid language that excuses or minimizes violence.

Belief is a powerful first step in creating a culture of accountability and compassion.

3. Respect Their Choices

Survivors may take steps that don’t align with what you think is “best.” Respecting their autonomy is crucial.

  • Don’t pressure: Allow them to move forward at their own pace.
  • Offer, don’t impose: Share resources and options, but let them decide what feels right.

Empowering survivors restores a sense of control that abuse often strips away.

4. Provide Practical Support

Small acts of care can ease big burdens.

  • Offer a safe space to stay.
  • Help with childcare, meals, or transportation.
  • Provide financial assistance if safe and appropriate.

These gestures help survivors feel less alone and more supported in daily life.

5. Educate Yourself and Raise Awareness

The more you understand about gender-based violence, the more effective your support becomes.

  • Learn the signs of abuse.
  • Challenge harmful stereotypes in conversations and online.
  • Support awareness campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Education creates ripple effects, building safer communities for everyone.

6. Share Resources (Including Nisa Foundation)

Survivors may not know where to find help. Having the right resources ready can save lives.

  • Local crisis lines and legal aid services: Available in most regions.

7. Work Toward Safer Communities

Supporting survivors also means preventing future harm.

  • Encourage schools, workplaces, and faith groups to implement anti-GBV policies.
  • Advocate for systemic change to hold institutions accountable.

When communities stand together, survivors know they are not alone, and the cycle of violence is disrupted.
